Defensive architecture and social exclusion in the city
In many cities, people complain that public spaces are not inviting. This seminar reflects on “defensive architecture” in particular and shows how it has been normalized by a public and professional security discourse. It is important to understand that the implementation and continuity of this urban planning practice is the result of professional, local and social contexts. Students are requested to discuss the issue on examples from their hometown or media reports. It will be framed by an analysis on social exclusion from a sociological point of view. In this way, architecture will be understood in the societal order of social inequalities and delivers an insight into the sociology of poverty.
