The course focuses on analysing what remains when interdisciplinary artistic projects end, in order to develop methodologies for managing their social, political and environmental impact.
While the cultural sector becomes more involved in societal discourses, artistic events increasingly function through project-based engagements, with limited temporal structures. The seminar follows the question, what do artistic projects leave behind and how to provide care for a sustainable after life. As a case study, we learn from contemporary art events by interviewing art world professionals to discuss current demands and limitations. Subsequently, the students develop ideas relating their own work to questions of artistic after care.
Interdisciplinarity // The effect of art events can be regarded very widely from cultural and economic effects to social and political dynamics, ecological impact, as well as urban development and architecture. By involving students from different disciplines and faculties such as visual art, design, urbanism and architecture, we aim to cover a broad spectrum of different perspectives. Thereby, through interdisciplinary group work, we encourage students to benefit from their different perspectives and think about new methods together. The seminar combines qualitative research with creative conception and practice. The video essay as final result is an open and flexible vehicle to transport interdisciplinary engagement
Learning Objectices // The aim of the seminar is for students to
- Become aware for the wider effects of art events in social, political and ecological dimensions
- Reflect on aftercare in relation to each own practice
- Get insight into the work of art world professionals as a means of networking and professionalization.
- Learn the basics of qualitative interviews as a research method.
- Discover new ideas and methods of care as a basis for future innovative, sustainable and responsible practice
- Explore new creative and interactive forms of exhibition making, with focus on the ‘beyond now’ or afterlife of events, and the environments where they are embedded in.
Didactic Setting // he seminar is structured in a succession of 4 units:

This conceptual idea is conveyed through video essays which will be developed in co-making sessions. Regular open tutorial sessions will be held throughout the course as an offer for exchange and feedback.
Repository:
- The students will decide in which form the video-essays will be presented in order to be available for future access to everyone in the University.
