Against the backdrop of increasing climatic extremes and environmental injustices, urban planning is faced with the challenge of having to navigate and adjust to changing boundary conditions. At the same time, plenty of urban development is still caught in extractivist logics that go beyond biophysical boundaries. The seminar centres on these challenges, examining concepts such as ‘habitability’ and ‘planetary boundaries’ – and their implications for urban development. Students are invited to engage with theoretical approaches and hands-on examples from planning practice in times of heightened climatic uncertainties. This will familiarize students with approaches such as post-growth planning and nature-based solutions while fostering critical engagement with contemporary debates on planetary boundaries and planning.

The seminar forms part of the nationwide project Fachlicher Nachwuchs entwirft Zukunkunft, in which students from different universities come together during a winter school to work on planning issues of the future. The winter school will be conducted in German and takes place from 1 to 5 March 2027 in Cottbus. This year’s topic is ‘The Post-Extractive City – Urban Planning Within Planetary Boundaries’. Participation in the winter school is limited to three students. Participants will be selected during the seminar.
