The course is dedicated to the research and artistic interpretation of the history and cultural identity of the Sendehalle in Weimar. The Sendehalle condenses a century of cultural, political, and media history – from the unfinished Nietzsche Memorial of the Nazi era, to the GDR's broadcasting centre, and later the Funkhaus techno venue. Interdisciplinarity | Participants will join an interdisciplinary group of student-researchers and artists from the Bauhaus-University Weimar to explore the Sendehalle as a site where cultural policy, media, architecture and informal urban practices intersect. The project is conceived as an open research environment, combining archival sources, museum collections, and published materials with artistic interpretation and historical research. Working directly in the Sendehalle, in the former offices of the broadcasting station’s administration, the group develops its research and artistic work on site and presents its results within the building itself. Learning Objectives | Participants will gain experience in archival and historical research, artistic interpretation, exhibition design, collaborative curatorial practice, site-specific artistic production, visual thinking, creative problem-solving, and communicating complex ideas to diverse audiences. At the end of the course, the student will present their research and artistic work in a form of public exhibition within the Winterwerkschau 2027. Didactic Concept | his course follows a project-oriented, practice-based approach. It combines theoretical inquiry, curatorial strategies, and case studies drawn from exhibition-making and archival practice. Students work collaboratively on different aspects of a research and artistic project under the close guidance of a practicing curator. The course also complements the existing curriculum by offering a rare opportunity to develop and present work on site. |

Each student or a student group will select a research topic or artistic project and develop it over the course of the semester for presentation at the final exhibition in the Sendehalle. Projects will be assessed on the depth and originality of the research, the effective use of archival sources and/or field research methods, and the conceptual clarity and quality of the exhibition presentation. The research assignments will be interdisciplinary and tailored to the academic skills of students from various faculties, aiming to develop and support those competencies accordingly. |
