This course will guide students through a series of observational documentaries that were produced by seminal filmmakers. We will watch and analyze the methods followed in some iconic cinéma vérité and direct cinema documentary films. For the in-class exercises, students will work either in groups or individually. The in-class assignments will consist of interview techniques, listening, audio and camera handling techniques. We will also have a quick look at the editing methods and philosophy behind some of the documentaries presented.
Students will have assignments that will allow them to practice, at least partially, participatory and observational storytelling from both direct cinema and cinéma vérité perspectives.
The aim is to experience both methods. Then the students will be able to form their own cinematic language. The interviews and audio-visual practice will be screened as part of in-class screenings. |
