Art has become a common subject in many cities. Often, it is only used to beautify spaces and the potential meanings of artistic actitivities is not taken up. In this way, art is regarded as an asset or commoditiy. However, the collaboration between urban designer and planers and artists could be much richer and resulting in more meaningful cooperations. Especially, when the needs and perspectives of citizens are the point of departure, art can open a door for the community to have meaningful encounters and strengthen social ties.Through which, art not only has the capacity to restore existing communities but also to cultivate brand new ones.
In this seminar, Runze Feng wants to work with students of our department to elaborate on the issue of art for community. He is a Chinese artist and designer who has worked on community art since many years. Under difficult circumstences as the corona crisis and the limitations of art in China, he has fullfilled his Art PhD using different methods of artistic research and art projects. |

This seminar will give the opportunity to understand more about artistic research and discuss different projects on art for community. The course will adopt a blended learning approach, combining both online and offline courses. In the online component (4 sessions), Runze will virtually bring participants to the community of Shunde City in China through remote live streaming, facilitating an authentic exploration of Chinese urban communities. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with the local residents of Shunde city in a "virtual" setting, co-participating in the community art project. This segment aims to enhance participants' understanding of community art within diverse social and cultural contexts. In the offline component, Runze will return to Weimar to conduct discussions and art practices rooted in the local context. It will work out a project aiming at the Weimar public space. Students are invited to work together with Runze Feng to realize this. |
